What Is Nikah halala? Meaning in Islam

Nikah halala is a label often used for an arrangement intended to enable remarriage after a third effective divorce. Classical law distinguishes such planned arrangements from a genuine subsequent marriage that later ends without that plan. It must never be presented as a service, a required procedure, or a justification for coercion.

Arabic and pronunciation

نكاح التحليل

Nikāḥ al-taḥlīl

Literal meaning: Marriage intended to make remarriage lawful

In the Qur'an and Sunnah

Qur'an 2:230 sets out the classical rule: after a third effective divorce, a woman cannot remarry her first husband unless she has entered a genuine marriage with another man that subsequently ends naturally, without a pre-arranged scheme. Classical explanations also require consummation of that genuine marriage; a paper contract alone is insufficient.

The majority of scholars hold a pre-arranged ‘halala’ marriage to be impermissible. Reports condemning and cursing the muhallil, the man involved in making such an arrangement, and the person for whom it is arranged are cited as Sunan Abu Dawud 2076, Jami at-Tirmidhi 1119, and Sunan Ibn Majah 1936. These hadith numbers are pending scholar verification.

How it works in practice

Qur'an 2:229 places divorce within limits intended to prevent harm, while Qur'an 2:232 addresses unjustly obstructing remarriage. These passages must not be used to pressure someone into another relationship. Establishing whether a third effective divorce has occurred requires qualified assessment; a glossary cannot determine anyone’s marital status.

Before making decisions, obtain an independent assessment of the divorce history from a qualified local scholar. Bring accurate dates, wording, relevant documents, and information about any previous reconciliations. Civil divorce and religious marital status can raise separate questions, so obtain legal advice where necessary. Do not rely on a broker’s assurances.

A genuinely independent second marriage is not a temporary step undertaken to return to a previous spouse. There can be no guarantee that it will end or that either person will later want a different marriage. If it ends through divorce or death, the relevant waiting period and other requirements must still be considered.

No one may ever be coerced into any marriage or divorce. Anyone facing pressure, threats, confinement, or sexual exploitation should seek help. In the UK, forced marriage is a criminal offence, and the UK Forced Marriage Unit offers a support route. In Pakistan, seek legal protections and appropriate government or specialist support helplines; use verified official contact details.

If seeking help could increase danger, use a safe device and contact a trusted specialist without alerting those applying pressure. For immediate danger, contact local emergency services. AlZauj does not present halala as a service. Do not send money or identity documents to anyone promising a guaranteed religious solution.

Common questions

Must I enter another marriage after divorce?
No. This rule is a restriction on remarriage to a particular former spouse after a third effective divorce, not an obligation to marry someone else. Remaining unmarried is not a failure to complete a procedure.
Is a planned one-night marriage a legitimate solution?
The majority prohibition on pre-arranged halala directly addresses such schemes. Do not treat a promised divorce, payment, or short duration as a safe workaround. Seek independent scholarly and safeguarding advice.
Does every divorce require this discussion?
No. The issue concerns a third effective divorce, not every separation. Counting divorces and assessing reconciliation depend on facts and scholarly interpretation; obtain a case-specific assessment rather than assuming the outcome.
What if relatives insist I participate?
You do not have to submit to coercion. Contact a trusted safeguarding professional, lawyer, or specialist forced-marriage support organisation. Ask for confidential assistance and explain any risks to your safety.
