What Is Ijab and qabul? Meaning in Islam
Ijab and qabul are the offer and acceptance through which a marriage agreement is expressed. They communicate a definite intention to enter marriage, rather than a future promise or engagement. Their wording, sequence, representation, and relationship to witnesses and guardians are considered within Islamic marriage law and applicable local legal requirements.
Arabic and pronunciation
الإيجاب والقبول
ījāb wa-qabūl
Literal meaning: Offer and acceptance
In the Qur'an and Sunnah
Qur'an 4:29 addresses property and trade by mutual consent, rather than prescribing a marriage ceremony. It should not be treated as a script for ijab and qabul. In marriage discussions, distinguishing genuine agreement from pressure remains essential; reciting words that a person does not freely accept should not be mistaken for meaningful consent.
Qur'an 2:232 warns against preventing women from remarrying when the parties agree on acceptable terms. Sahih al-Bukhari 5142 addresses seeking a woman's permission for marriage. These sources inform attention to consent, but they do not remove the need to understand the other contractual requirements recognised by the relevant school of law.
How it works in practice
Before the ceremony, ask the officiant who will make the offer, who will accept, and what each statement means. Confirm that the intended spouses are clearly identified and that the mahr and agreed conditions are understood. A rehearsal can explain the process, but it should be clearly distinguished from actually concluding the contract.
Use language that the relevant participants understand, with reliable interpretation where necessary. An acceptance should correspond to the offer rather than introduce an unresolved change. If someone is absent, represented by an agent, or joining remotely, obtain advance advice about authorisation, witnesses, identity verification, and local rules. Do not assume that a video call or exchanged messages automatically satisfy every requirement.
In Pakistan, arrange the ceremony and registration through the appropriate authorised process, and ensure the nikah-nama accurately records the agreement. In the UK, spoken religious offer and acceptance do not alone guarantee civil marriage status. Confirm the applicable civil formalities in the relevant UK jurisdiction before relying on the ceremony for legal rights or immigration documentation.
Gulf states may require court or authorised officiant involvement and specified documentation; arrangements vary with nationality and residency. In France and Germany, a religious exchange does not replace the civil marriage process. Cross-border or proxy ceremonies need particular legal scrutiny. Ask the competent authority about recognition before booking travel or making financial commitments.
Common questions
- Must the words be in Arabic?
- Arabic is not a universal requirement for every marriage contract. The wording must communicate the intended agreement under the applicable religious rules. Discuss language and translation beforehand with a qualified scholar and the officiant, especially where participants speak different languages or the ceremony crosses jurisdictions.
- Is saying yes at an engagement enough?
- An engagement normally expresses an intention to marry later, not the marriage contract itself. Context and the actual statements matter. If there is uncertainty about whether a contract was concluded, seek an individual assessment rather than assuming that an informal conversation either definitely created or definitely excluded marriage.
- Can a representative speak for someone?
- Representation is recognised in Islamic legal discussions, but authority and contractual requirements need careful checking. Obtain advice about how permission is established and documented. A representative cannot simply override the wishes of the person represented, and civil recognition may require additional or different procedures.
- What if someone feels pressured during the ceremony?
- Pause the process and give the person a safe opportunity to speak privately. Family expectations, silence, or a signature should not be used to dismiss an expressed refusal. Where coercion or danger is present, prioritise safety and contact an appropriate safeguarding service or independent legal adviser.
